Imada Kancho began his karate career in January 1969 while attending the University of Hawaii under the instruction of Sensei Kenneth Funakoshi of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). As an extremely focused individual, Imada Kancho became the fastest JKA student to ever attain his first black belt in 1 year and 9 months. While under Sensei Funakoshi, he trained and taught regularly, and was even entrusted with instructing his sensei’s son Kyle Funakoshi. During this time, he was the head instructor for the Pearl City, Punahou High School, and Manoa dojos before eventually starting his own school (SKC) in 1991.
With Shotokan karate has his base, Imada Kancho has also ventured into other martial arts because he felt that just knowing 1 style was too limiting and it left too many unanswered questions. Hungering for more, he expanded his knowledge to include Okinawa weaponry, Escrima, Ryukyu pressure points, Matsubayashi-ryu, judo, tai chi, Muay Thai, boxing, and grappling. Having systematically taken all these disciplines, he has directed 4 decades of knowledge into his own style: Tsumuji-ryu. Today, all his energies are spent on martial arts and the perfection of his developing style.

Imada Kancho graduated from the University of Hawaii with a BFA in Visual Design. After 28 years with Hopaco Boise Cascade, he is currently the manager of Advertising & Promotions for Star Markets Ltd. with four locations on Oahu, three on Maui, and one on Kauai. He also had a worldwide reputation of being one of the foremost Bonsai masters in Hawaii and co-published a book, Bonsai in Hawaii. He's married with two children.
